What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives perished and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as ā€œlively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help peopleā€.

ā€œHow can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?ā€ a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. ā€œHe pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,ā€ she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

ā€œThis despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,ā€ the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an ā€œutter carnage,ā€ but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a ā€œmiracleā€ he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to ā€œa large numberā€ of shots.

ā€œI thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,ā€ he stated. ā€œI’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.ā€
