He remarked, "It's evident that Russia is scrambling to restart dialogue immediately after it learns of cruise missiles." These remarks referred to earlier comments about providing advanced missiles to the Ukrainian military.

Diplomatic Moves and Global Responses

A former US state department official, Dan Fried, observed, "The Russian leader is trying to disrupt the momentum toward greater pressure on the Kremlin." Fried continued, "We'll see on Friday, but the chances of achieving a truce by pressuring Moscow to get serious seem to have diminished."

This situation came after Trump had in recent days been strengthening his rhetoric toward Moscow until Thursday's conversation with Putin, which the Russian government characterized as "highly open and constructive."

European Energy Sanctions and Market Effects

The European Union have established a requirement for energy importers into the EU to prove their products are not sourced from Russian oil, according to a official guideline published on recently. This step is part of the European Union's forthcoming ban on purchases of fuels processed from Russian crude, which forms part of its latest restrictive measures against Russia over its military actions in Ukraine.

Financial analysts noted that trading activity appeared to be considering the potential reduction of India's purchases of Russian oil. Some Indian refiners are getting ready to cut purchases from Russia, with projections of a phased reduction, as reported by sources knowledgeable about the situation.

"This is a favorable turn for the crude oil price as it would eliminate a major customer of Russian crude," said a market analyst, adding that oil prices were steady on Thursday.

Military Developments and Energy Strikes

A massive Moscow's unmanned aircraft and rocket attack hit gas facilities in eastern Ukraine on the same day, resulting in disruptions in multiple areas. Authorities in Ukraine reported that Russia launched numerous of drones and dozens of projectiles, along with glide bombs.

"This autumn, the Russians use daily opportunities to attack at our energy infrastructure," declared Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that attacks impacted the regions of Chernihiv, eastern Ukraine, central Ukraine, Sumy and Vinnytsia.

International Diplomatic Reactions

Ukraine's envoy to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, stated that Russia demonstrated its real approach to peace through the "violence" of these attacks. "The Russian government yet again opted for weapons over dialogue, turning this assault into a direct setback to ongoing peace efforts," Stefanishyna commented.

Meanwhile, the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced that the EU had little option but to strengthen defensive systems against Russian threats. She revealed a "plan" to get ready for possible conflict by the end of the decade, featuring a novel anti-drone system to be fully operational by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, called the "European drone defence initiative," is expected to start operations initially by the 2026 timeline and be fully functioning by the end of 2027. Brussels hopes to obtain the backing of EU leaders at a summit in the coming days.
