A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building visible behind assisted us verify the footage.
We are checking images and video circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site of where the images originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
