For the Cashier That Left Me Absolutely Wordless – Kudos to You

This occurred on a Sunday morning, and I found myself in a foul mood, refueling my mum’s car. This was a typical gas station that doubles as a grocery store, so you run the risk of joining a queue people bearing baskets of slightly overpriced groceries. A terrible fate to unfold when your only desire is to pay for some fuel. Dreadful.

My position was fourth among those waiting. There was only cashier operating, a youthful clerk. Something stood out about her. When the faffer at the front of the queue had finally paid for his Viakal, his sausage roll, and some breakfast items, It seemed to me I heard the cashier wish him to have a great day. Odd. Maybe it was a mistake, or maybe she did say it and was being sarcastic. I wondered if perhaps she was an ally in my battle with dithering, reflecting my irritation for those who delay people just getting gas such as myself.

Taking a step forward, becoming the third customer. The person ahead of the queue finished pumping gas with notable efficiency. And there it was again: “Wishing you a marvelous day.” In fact, it was “have a wonderful day”. Someone from the US? At this location? She had the accent, and few locals wishes anyone those exact words, or simply a good day. Quite out of place. You don’t get people from America visiting this town, and definitely not holding jobs in fueling spots or anywhere else.

Second in line at last. Behind a poor older woman embroiled in a right old battle with her basket, her purchases, her handbag and her loyalty card. This took an eternity. After she finished, she too got told to have a fantastic day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by making a witty remark at the cashier, to check for that reaction as they gaze at you, stoically, and reply with genuine earnest: “You are very amusing.” However, nothing occurred of a funny comment to say.

I just had to settle the genuine warmth – or an impersonation of it, essentially the same as identical in effect – as she gazed directly into my eyes, to my very core, and bid me to have a great day. I felt better for it. A positive experience.
