Far-Right Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's Next President.
In a decisive final ballot, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Triumph
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Campaign Centered On Security and Migration
Known for his strong socially conservative views and praise for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely focused on promises to tackle growing insecurity and radically restrict migration.
He consistently pointed to immigrants, especially the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the race, he gave an stern warning for them to depart before the inauguration or face expulsion.
His plans featured controversial measures such as erecting holding facilities, border walls, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Amid a Continental Trend
Numerous commentators see Kast's win as part of a larger rightward wave in the region, coming after recent political wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other pundits also describe it as a continuation of the predictable rotation of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Strong Majority
In spite of his decisive popular vote win, Kast will not have an absolute majority in Congress, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all conservative parties are counted together.
