Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to personally create this new flavor as part of an individual series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Support
Mr. Cohen announced through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.
âI'm accomplishing what they couldn't,â the founder stated in a cooking set. âI'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.â
The watermelon has become a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner â the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which originally established several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Future Plans
The founder revealed how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company in September, after many years of involvement, citing worries regarding how its independence had been undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented how âMy partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
âMy conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
