American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, causing airports to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by climate and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," he said in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, can I find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in history.

He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," Duffy said.

On that day, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert was issued at 08:45 in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were postponed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second-busiest airport in the US, could encounter problems from low staffing later in the day.

The agency advised travelers in California to consult carriers about revised flight schedules.

The situation precedes the third match of the World Series, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest periods to fly in the United States.

Pressure on US air travel helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including pilot training.

It led a number of flight controllers to remain absent on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his initial presidency as leader, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, bringing an end to the federal closure after thirty-five days.
